'PYAAZ-E-AAZAM' RETURNS!!!!!

'For the past six months, media has been constantly dishing out stories on onions. Everyday newspapers carry at least three to four articles dedicated to the hon'ble onions. In television also, Prime Time debates are flooded with ONIONS, ONIONS and ONIONS!!!'

The above-mentioned lines are from one of the write ups I wrote for my college magazine almost two years back. These days, the same scenario can be witnessed again as we can see 'Pyaaz-e-aazam' has returned as people are finding it so difficult to include onions in their meals once again. Cutting the onions is bringing more tears in the eyes of the folks.

Every week, prices are increasing as if there is a competition among the vegetables and these onions will be rightfully crowned as “pyaaz-e-aazam” for being the most expensive ones.

It has been quite long since onions are being sold for Rs 80 - Rs 100 per kg across different parts of the country and our government has thousands of deceptions to justify these throat-cutting rates. Hoarding, heavy rains, corruption, black marketing, among several other factors are tended to be responsible for the crisis.

Our leaders always keep on convincing people that very soon the prices will fall and they will be able to relish the taste of onions. However, it doesn’t happen unless the election mode is nearby. In the current scenario, we all are aware of the upcoming elections in Bihar. As the voting day would be nearing, we can expect the fall in prices of these onions at least in the State, as it also happened in Delhi during the Lok Sabha Elections. Barely one month before polling, onion prices fell up to Rs 30 - Rs 40 per kg in the Capital.

This is how UPA’s jaadu ki chhadi worked that time. BJP might also be grateful to UPA if it can lend them that magical stick.

There was a time when onions could be purchased just for Rs 10 - Rs 20 per kg and the poor man could fill his stomach with just an onion and two chapattis. (gareeb aadmi pyaaz ki chatni bana ke, namak-mirch mila ke do rotiyan kha leta tha.) But now, even that is not feasible.

The crisis at the moment is such that it compels us to imagine a day when people would opt for onions as a Diwali Gift for their friends instead of sweets and dry fruits.

God bless the folks..!!!
