The above-mentioned title has been inspired by the tagline of the renowned newspaper, The Indian Express, which says, "Journalism of Courage". The line is worth all the admiration because this is one of the newspapers whose reporters have got enormous courage to report the right and authentic news, as far as my experience till now suggests. While studying journalism, most of our teachers also advised us to read this newspaper the most.
Now, comparing the title of my write-up with the Indian Express tagline, you might get an idea what actually I am trying to say. These days, human race is rapidly progressing with technology, and by its grace, we are witnessing an era of online journalism. However, the way it is growing, I feel, is not good enough.
Every other day, one can see a whole lot of news portals coming up. Moreover, all our newspapers and TV channels have their online news websites, 24*7 offering breaking news. Indeed an excellent task! Nonetheless, it wouldn't be wrong to say that some of them earnestly follow this rule of copy paste.
It is right that the competition in the present scenario is quite high, and everyone has to make money. Thus, just for the sake of it, one has to cook a story, either by hook or by crook. Therefore, in such a scenario all one is capable of doing is just copy the story from a website, rephrase it, and upload it on their own website, no matter whether it is actually a news or not. And the task is accomplished!
Earlier, in the name of journalism, there used to be reporters who would work hard to gather the information and put it in front of the audience in a proper manner in order to make them aware. This is something news is supposed to do. Today, news channels and websites show all those babas performing black magic tricks to empower people so that they can easily tackle with the problems going on in their life. Besides, what Deepika Padukone likes about Ranveer and how Salman, Shahrukh blessed Arpita at her wedding, are the news stories these days. Seems quite vague.
I accept the fact that I am an amateur in the industry, and there are a whole lot of things to experience and learn. But, is this the only thing left in the name of journalism? I don't understand how media houses work and what are the various strategies to cope with several different issues. Perhaps, a few years down the lane, I will get to know much more, and the things I am talking about today might not be the same tomorrow. However, till then, the only interesting thing would be to witness the real destination of this "Journalism of Copy Paste".
